How Heat Pump Water Heaters Differ from Gas Water Heaters
Gas water heaters use natural gas or propane to heat water. They are typically less expensive to purchase and install than heat pump water heaters, but they are not as energy-efficient. Gas water heaters also produce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change.
On the other hand, heat pump water heaters are much more energy-efficient and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions. They can save homeowners up to 60% on their water heating costs compared to gas water heaters.
However, they are more expensive to purchase and install, and they may not be suitable for all homes, especially those in colder climates where the air temperature can drop below 40°F.
California’s Gas Water Heater Ban
In September 2021, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced a plan to ban the sale of gas water heaters in the state by 2030. The ban is part of the state’s effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.
According to CARB, gas water heaters are responsible for about 7% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. By transitioning to heat pump water heaters and other zero-emission technologies, the state hopes to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
The ban will apply to new construction and will not affect existing gas water heaters. However, homeowners will be encouraged to replace their gas water heaters with heat pump water heaters or other zero-emission alternatives when their current units end their lifespan.
